Putnam County resident John Welch, of Mahopac, died on Thursday, April 6 at the age of 56, according to his obituary.
Born in the Bronx in 1967, Welch graduated from Mount Saint Michael Academy before earning a bachelor's degree and a law degree from St. John’s University in Queens.
Welch then began a career in law enforcement and joined the NYPD, serving as a police officer for 26 years before being assigned to the Legal Bureau.
In this role, Welch served as an attorney for the department before retiring in 2012.
He then continued his career and worked as a private practice attorney and eventually as staff counsel for the Allstate Insurance Company.
Welch was also dedicated to his family. He married his wife and best friend, Kerry, in 1989, and had three children with her.
Welch also held a passion for working with his hands and could often be found building and repairing stringed instruments such as guitars and violins.
Dedicated to his faith, Welch was also a very active parishioner at Christ the King Church in Ridgefield, Connecticut, his obituary said.
Welch is survived by his wife, Kerry; his three children, Patrick, Edward, and Brigid; and his four siblings, Edward, Catherine, Patrick, and Mary.
A visitation service for Welch will be held on Thursday, April 13 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Cargain Funeral Home in Mahopac located at 418 Route 6.
Another short visitation service accompanied by the NYPD Ceremonial Honor Guard Unit will be held on Friday, April 14 from 9 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. before a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at the Christ the King SSPX Church in Ridgefield at 209 Tackora Trl.
